How EFT Works

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a form of alternative therapy that involves tapping on specific acupressure points on the body while thinking about a negative thought or feeling. The goal of EFT is to release the emotional charge associated with the thought or feeling, and to replace it with a more positive feeling.

Here are the steps on how to do EFT:

  1. Identify the issue. What is the negative thought or feeling that you want to work on?
  2. Rate your intensity. On a scale of 0 to 10, how intense is your emotional reaction to this issue?
  3. Set up statement. Say a statement that acknowledges the issue and your willingness to work on it. For example, you might say, “Even though I’m feeling anxious about my upcoming presentation, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”
  4. Start tapping. Tap on the following points while repeating your setup statement:
    • The karate chop point (the side of your hand, below your little finger)
    • The eyebrow point (the inside corner of your eyebrow)
    • The side of the eye point (under your eye, near your nose)
    • Under the eye point (directly under your eye)
    • Under the nose point (between your nose and your upper lip)
    • Chin point (the crease between your lower lip and your chin)
    • Collarbone point (the notch beneath your collarbone)
    • Under the arm point (about 4 inches below your armpit)
  5. Tap on each point for 7-10 times. As you tap, repeat your setup statement and focus on the issue that you are working on.
  6. Check your intensity. After you have tapped on all of the points, rate your intensity again on a scale of 0 to 10. If your intensity is still high, repeat steps 3-5 until your intensity is down to 0 or 1.
  7. Ending statement. Once your intensity is down to 0 or 1, say an ending statement that affirms your positive intention. For example, you might say, “I am calm and relaxed, and I am confident in my ability to give my presentation.”

You can do EFT on your own or with a practitioner. If you are new to EFT, it is helpful to work with a practitioner who can teach you the technique and help you to troubleshoot any problems that you may encounter.

EFT is a safe and effective way to reduce stress, anxiety, and other negative emotions. It is a simple technique that you can use anytime you need to feel better.
