Nerve Conduction Study

A nerve conduction study (NCS) is a test that measures the electrical activity of nerves. It is used to diagnose and assess nerve damage.

An F wave is a late response that follows the motor response (M). It is elicited by supramaximal electrical stimulation of a mixed or a motor nerve. F waves provide a means of examining transmission between stimulation sites in the arm and the leg and the related motor neurons in the cervical and lumbosacral cord.

The absence of left tibial F wave response (Sandra’s test result) could be due to a number of factors, including:

  • Peripheral nerve damage: This can be caused by injury, compression, or inflammation.
  • Central nervous system damage: This can be caused by stroke, multiple sclerosis, or other conditions.
  • Muscle disease: This can be caused by conditions such as muscular dystrophy or myasthenia gravis.
  • Medications: Some medications, such as chemotherapy drugs, can damage nerves.
  • Other medical conditions: Some medical conditions, such as diabetes, can increase the risk of developing nerve damage.

If you have no response to the left tibial F wave, it is important to see a doctor to get a diagnosis and discuss treatment options. Treatment will vary depending on the underlying cause of the problem.

Here are some tips to help prevent nerve damage:

  • Avoid injury: If you are involved in a high-risk activity, such as contact sports, wear protective gear.
  • Take care of your muscles: Exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet.
  • Manage your medical conditions: If you have a medical condition that increases your risk of nerve damage, such as diabetes, make sure to manage it properly.
  • Avoid smoking: Smoking can damage nerves.
  • See a doctor if you have any concerns: If you have any concerns about your nerves, see a doctor.

Note: Sandra had this test done and this is one of the results.
